Play and culture were at the heart of the concept. Both ideas, directly and indirectly, made their way into the final design and guided the thought process throughout. The focal material we are using is sand, and in itself, sand is a playful material. The way it moves, accumulates, shifts and the endless playful interactions we have with it growing up

Using sand to compose the skin contextualized the pavilions. An abundant yet underused local material, the sand was adapted to perform as intelligent climate control. A modern rendition of a traditional “Mashrabiya” and act as a veil between the exhibit and audiences before entry. Loci adopted new techniques and modelled real-size mock-ups to achieve the end results.
